What is critical illness cover? Which conditions a UAE plan can list

Critical illness cover pays a benefit when the insured person is diagnosed with a serious illness named in the policy. The benefit helps with costs the person can no longer meet from income, such as treatment or time off work. HAYAH, a UAE-licensed life and health insurance provider regulated by the Central Bank of the UAE (hayah.com), includes critical illness cover in some of its plans.

How critical illness cover works

  1. The policy lists the illnesses it covers.
  2. The insured person is diagnosed with one of them.
  3. The provider checks the diagnosis against the policy definition.
  4. The provider pays the benefit, which the insured person can spend as they choose.

The policy definition of each illness decides whether a claim qualifies, so the wording matters more than the illness name.

Conditions a plan can list

According to hayah.com, checked on 3 November 2026, the HAYAH Your Employee Protect (YEP) page links an annexure for critical illness that lists these conditions.

  • Cancer
  • Coronary artery bypass surgery
  • Heart attack
  • Kidney failure
  • Major organ transplant
  • Stroke

HAYAH states that YEP also covers death and disability due to accident or sickness. The annexure is available as a PDF on the HAYAH site.

Questions to ask before choosing

  1. Which illnesses are covered, and how does the policy define each one?
  2. Are there waiting periods or exclusions?
  3. Does the benefit pay once or can it pay again?
  4. Is the cover sold on its own or with a life policy?
  5. Is the provider regulated in the UAE?
